What an AI assistant can and cannot see in your Shopify store

Your catalogue, policies and shipping rates reach the assistant. Your customers and orders never do. Here is the exact boundary, and the one thing that goes stale if nobody presses a button.

What a Shopify store sends to a knowledge base and when, with policies waiting for a manual sync

Installing an app that reads your store is a question about access before it is a question about answers. The first thing worth knowing is not what the assistant says. It is what it was given.

The short version: it reads what a shopper could already see, and none of what only you can see. The useful version has a boundary in the middle of it, and one piece of it moves slower than the rest.

What reaches the knowledge base, and how fast

Press the button and watch which rows change.

InteractiveWhat a Shopify store sends, and when

Products and collections re-sync when Shopify says they changed, which is within seconds. Pages, articles, policies and shipping rates do not, because Shopify publishes no notification for them. They refresh when somebody presses Sync now.

That is the one operational habit this integration asks of you. Rewrite the refund policy, press the button. It takes a second and it is the difference between an assistant quoting your current policy and your previous one.

The detail in a product that surprises people

A product does not arrive as a title and a price. It arrives with its variants, each with its options, SKU, barcode, price and whether it can be bought right now. A reduced price is described as reduced from the old one, so the assistant can say so the way your product page does.

Two more things travel with it. Text and number metafields come across, which is where material, dimensions, care and warranty usually live, so those answers exist without anybody rewriting them into a document. And the image alt text comes as words, while the photo itself is kept alongside, which is why a cited product appears as a product in the answer: its picture, its name, and a button that opens it on your store.

What is deliberately left out

Not sent
Why
Customers and orders
The app never asks Shopify for them, so who bought what never reaches us
Draft, unlisted and archived products
Not for sale. One that changes to any of those is removed from the knowledge base
Collections with no description
They could only ever match their own name
Unpublished pages
Same rule as a shopper sees
Reference, JSON and file metafields
An app's bookkeeping rather than something to read aloud

There is one deliberate exception, and the app asks you about it once rather than deciding for you. A product that is for sale but not on your online store is real, and it has no page to link to. If you sell those another way, wholesale or in person, you can include them and the assistant will describe them without a working link.

What this means for the answers

Two shoppers, two different kinds of question.

"Do you have a snowboard for under 700?" is answerable, because price, availability and collection are all in the catalogue it received.

"Where is my order?" is not, and it should not be. The assistant has never seen an order, so the honest reply is to say so and point at the account page. A shop that wires an assistant to answer that question is making a different and much larger decision about data, and it should make it deliberately rather than by installing an app.

welcomeai.devConnect Shopify: what it reads, how it syncs and how it is billed

The parts that are not about data at all

Three practical notes, because they come up in the same conversation.

  • The chat goes on as a switch, not a snippet. It is an app embed for a floating chat, or an app block for the inline and search types, placed in the theme editor. Uninstalling the app takes the chat with it and your theme goes back to what it was.
  • The app only ever reads. Nothing it does writes to your store.
  • It is billed on your Shopify bill, on the same plans as everywhere else, with the trial counted by Shopify. If you already pay by card, connecting a store moves the workspace onto that bill rather than charging twice.
The sync is not a content strategy

Everything above puts your store into a knowledge base. It does not write the answers your product pages never had: sizing guidance, what is in the box, how a return actually works. Those still have to exist somewhere, and the list of questions the assistant could not answer is where you find out which ones are missing.

Questions people ask

Install it, then do two things in the first hour: press Sync now after you have tidied your policies, and ask it the five questions your support inbox gets every week. What it cannot answer is your content plan, and it is usually shorter than you fear.
