An assistant that cannot cite its source should not answer

Why every answer in WelcomeAI arrives with its passages, and what changes when a support team can check them.

The failure mode everyone worries about with an AI assistant is that it makes something up. The failure mode that actually costs you is subtler: it says something plausible, nobody checks, and a customer acts on it.

Citations are a working tool, not a badge

A citation under an answer is usually treated as a trust signal for the visitor. It is that, but the person it helps most is whoever maintains the content.

When an answer is wrong and you can see it came from shipping-policy.pdf page 4, you know exactly what to fix. Without that, you are guessing at prompts.

What we do when there is nothing to cite

The assistant says it does not know, and offers to hand over to a person if you have configured that. It does not improvise from general knowledge, because a plausible answer about your refund policy is worse than no answer at all.

Those moments are collected in Analytics under Questions. That list is the most useful thing on the page: it is your content backlog, written by your customers.

The one number to watch

Answered from your knowledge base, as a share of all answers. If it drops, either people started asking about something you have not written down, or an indexing job failed quietly.

It is on the Overview tab, next to the answer count, for exactly that reason.
